A lone police officer, Inspector Amy Scott, is being credited with stopping a violent attack at Westfield Bondi Junction shopping center in Sydney on Saturday. T
he incident tragically resulted in the deaths of six people and injuries to eight others.
Inspector Scott, who works in the eastern suburbs police command, was near the shopping center when the rampage began.
Reacting quickly, she raced through the top level and confronted the 40-year-old attacker armed with a knife.
In a display of courage, Inspector Scott engaged the suspect, who lunged at her.
She responded decisively, shooting him to stop the threat.
Despite the harrowing situation, Inspector Scott didn’t hesitate to help further.
She performed CPR on the attacker while also attending to injured victims in nearby stores until additional officers arrived.
Inspector Scott is ‘doing well under the circumstances,’ NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb said on Saturday evening.
She will be formally interviewed as part of the investigation into the deadly stabbings.
It’s not the first time Inspector Scott has been recognised for her policing efforts.
In 2019, she was a sergeant stationed at nearby Kings Cross when she was recognised at the Rotary Club Police Officer of the Year award ceremony.
She received the Demonstrated Courage and Devotion to Duty award.
