U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Roger Fortson has been identified as the 23-year-old man shot dead in Friday’s officer-involved shooting in Okaloosa County.

Hurlburt Field says Roger Fortson was assigned to the 4th Special Operations Squadron.

He entered active duty on Nov. 19, 2019.

“The 1st Special Operations Wing’s priorities are providing casualty affairs service to the family, supporting the squadron during this tragic time, and ensuring resources are available for all who are impacted,” Hurlburt Field says in a release.

The incident happened Friday afternoon at an apartment complex on 319 Racetrack Road.

According to a release, the deputy on the scene acted in self-defense upon hearing sounds of a disturbance, encountering the 23-year-old who was allegedly armed with a gun.

The sheriff’s office says that happened after the deputy identified himself as law enforcement.

Fortson was taken to the hospital but would later succumb to his injuries.

No deputies were injured.

Per standard protocol the deputy is placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcoming of a formal investigation and administrative review.
