A mother has confirmed that one of the two individuals who lost their lives on Saturday night at the Historic Market Square is 18-year-old Mikey Valdez.
According to the San Antonio police, Valdez allegedly fired at a 20-year-old man before fleeing from the authorities.
His mother, Gabrielle Rodriguez, stated that the police fired five shots at him, resulting in his death.
The 20-year-old man also succumbed to his injuries.
The festive atmosphere at Historic Market Square was shattered by a tragic incident late Saturday night as gunfire erupted between two young men, resulting in their deaths, according to San Antonio police officials.
The circumstances surrounding their deaths and the events leading up to the shooting remain unclear.
However, Police Chief William McManus stated that officers responded promptly to the gunfire in the vicinity of South Santa Rosa and Dolorosa.
Additionally, six bystanders sustained injuries, with two of them transported to local hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
“At approximately 1:30 a.m., McManus commented, “We have a very active crime scene here, and we’re in the process of sorting through everything.”
The exact time of the gunfire remains unknown, but the police chief noted that multiple officers discharged their firearms during the incident.
“Two officers returned fire, and the individual was subsequently pronounced deceased,” McManus stated.
Two firearms were recovered by authorities at the scene.
The identities of the victims involved in the shooting, which occurred in a bustling area of town typically crowded during the Fiesta season and just a few blocks south of where Fiesta Flambeau concluded Saturday night, have not yet been released.
McManus confirmed that the investigation is ongoing. Later, in a post on X, the police chief disclosed that only four additional individuals sustained injuries.”
