Kendrick McDonald, a 10-year-old boy was shot and killed in Omaha, Nebraska, on Thanksgiving, and his father Will McDonald has been arrested.
Officers responded to the area of N. 31st and Nicholas Street around 11:30 p.m. Thursday for a reported shooting and arrived to find 10-year-old Kendrick McDonald suffering from a gunshot wound.
Kendrick was transported to a nearby hospital, Nebraska Medicine, by the Omaha Fire Department.
He died at the hospital.
Kendrick’s father, Will McDonald, 47, was arrested for criminal homicide, use of a weapon, and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.
“He was taken into custody and booked for criminal homicide use of a weapon to commit a felony and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person,” Christensen said.
Police said multiple witnesses were inside the home and taken in for questioning.
Detectives are trying to piece together what led to one family losing two people in one night.
“It appears that at the scene there was a car alarm going off. We don’t really know exactly what transpired at this point,” Christensen said.
OPD said they believe the father thought a car theft may be happening.

“Anytime anyone is killed, this is extremely tragic. But this is heartbreaking,” Christensen said.
The investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
