The 16-year-old CBC student who was struck by a stray bullet on Interstate 55 Saturday has died from his injuries, according to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (SLMPD).
Police say Colin Brown was a passenger in a car heading north on I-55 around 10:30 p.m. Saturday when he was shot by a stray bullet.
He was on his way home from a CBC varsity hockey game, which the team played in Affton that night.
Brown’s family is asking for privacy at this time, according to SLMPD. They have expressed deep appreciation to law enforcement, the hockey community and those who loved Colin.
His family says Brown was a beloved and talented hockey player and passed away, “but not before giving the ultimate gift of life.”
On Wednesday, Brown’s organs were donated to other patients in desperate need.
“This donation is an example of the type of young man Colin was and the kind of family he grew up in,” according to the family.
The investigation is ongoing by police. SLMPD has received numerous tips that homicide dectectives are following up on.
Police are asking anyone who lives near I-55 and Loughborough, or who was driving on the interstate Saturday night with information to contact them at 314-444-5371. No tip or piece of information is too small.
Officers have been canvassing the neighborhood to see if any residents caught the incident on surveillance camera.
“The death of Colin Brown is devastating news for our whole community. We were all praying for a miracle and are now overwhelmed with grief, sadness, and anger that this innocent teenager’s life has been taken. As the mother of a teenage son, I grieve with all who knew and loved this young man,” St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones said in a statement.
“We will never have true justice for the loss of Colin’s life. But I know that the great officers of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department will continue to do all they can to find who is responsible for this senseless and reckless act of violence and hold them accountable to the fullest extent of the law. Everyone who knew and loved Colin is in my prayers.”
The hockey community has been rallying behind Colin and his family. Players are leaving their sticks out on porches as a tribute to the player. Spectrum News spotted some at the Affton Ice Rink Wednesday.
The St. Louis Blues have been showing its support for Colin Brown this week.
After learning of his death, the team shared on X that it will celerate Colin’s life with a pre-game moment on Saturday. Proceeds from the 50/50 raffle will benefit Colin’s family.
