A woman was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon at an apartment complex in northwest Charlotte.
The homicide investigation was on Strive Street at the Ascent at Mallard Creek Apartments off of Odell School Road outside the Interstate 485 loop.
“It was one loud bang at first, which sounded like a car backfiring, so that’s what I thought it was,” said witness Charles Armstrong. “Then it was a succession of loud bangs.”
Witnesses said a man shot the woman who was running through the parking lot at about 3:30 p.m.
“I happened to see her lying on the pavement and called 911,” Armstrong said.
One witness said they heard three shots and saw a young woman fall to the ground and a man run through a breezeway before fleeing. That person was wearing all black, the witness said.
Armstrong said he doesn’t feel safe.
“But I imagine everybody feels that way right now, just not knowing and it being broad daylight,” Armstrong said.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has not confirmed those details in the investigation.
On Thursday, court records reveals that the suspect, Dasean Maddox, 32, was charged with first-degree murder and robbery in connection with the homicide.
Maddox was taken to the Mecklenburg County jail, and he had a court appearance scheduled Thursday afternoon.
The victim was identified as 33-year-old Jameisha Wilkes.
Court documents obtained by Channel 9 indicated that Maddox told a family member that he had impregnated Wilkes.
He then admitted to the family member that he drove to Wilkes’ apartment, shot her, and then took her cell phone and drove over it.
