Exavier Tywan Mitchell has been identified as the 26-year-old Birmingham man who was killed in an assault on Wednesday morning.
According to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office, Exavier Tywan Mitchell was shot and killed on the 2300 block of Warrior Road in Birmingham around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Birmingham police and Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service responded just after 2:30 p.m. Tuesday to the Dollar General in the 2300 block of Warrior Road, not far from Five Points West.
Shot Spotter, the city’s gunfire detection system, indicated at least 16 rounds fired.
Officers arrived to find Mitchell unresponsive in the far end of the parking lot. He was outside his black SUV.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced him dead on the scene at 2:44 p.m.
According to police radio communications, a dark vehicle fled the scene.
Officer Truman Fitzgerald said they don’t believe the shooting was random, and the victim may have known his killer.
“This incident happened in broad daylight,’’ Fitzgerald said
Multiple grieving family members rushed to the scene, including the victim’s mother.
“You cannot begin to describe the screams we have heard on this call,’’ Fitzgerald said. “That’s something you never get used to.”
“Everyone’s heartbroken,’’ he said. “We’ve heard those cries too often in 2023.”
Mitchell is Birmingham’s 134th homicide victim this year. Of those, one was an officer-involved shooting by an outside law enforcement agency and nine others have been ruled justifiable.
In all of Jefferson County, there have been 189 homicides including the 134 in Birmingham.
No arrests have been made and authorities are asking anyone with information to come forward. The area is heavily traveled and populated so investigators believe there are witnesses out there with information.
