An Illinois community is mourning the demise of Alexis Maki, a Grit and Tonic bartender who was shot and killed over the weekend by suspect Emmet Metzger.
According to authorities, the shooting happened Nov. 4.
New Baden police confirmed that after the shooting at 121 E. Hanover Street, Metzger walked across the street to the police department and turned himself in.
“Metzger had called 911 and was at the police station stating that he needed to be arrested,” Brandmeyer recalled. “While en route, dispatch advised that Metzger claimed he just shot his girlfriend.”

Alexis Maki and Emmet Metzger were in a relationship but broke up in October.
Joseph Link, the best friend of Alexis Maki said Link said Alexis texted him the morning of her death and told him she was having a rough day.
He said Alexis had broken up with her boyfriend, 25-year-old Emmet Metzger, in late October.
Link said Alexis was lured back to her apartment on Hanover Street in New Baden, Illinois, so Metzger could say “goodbye” to the animals they shared together.
“We actually had plans to go on a cruise together in Alaska. And so she won’t be able to go do that. So it’s gonna be hard,” Link said.
Who was Alexis Maki?
Alexis Maki, age 24, of New Baden, IL, born on June 18, 1999, in Belleville, IL, died on Saturday, November 4, 2023, at her residence.
Alexis graduated from Wesclin High School, New Baden, IL and attended Kaskaskia College for Radiology scheduled to graduate in May.
She worked at Grit and Tonic as a bartender.
She was very involved in helping others throughout her life, and people gravitated towards her charm.
Alexis is survived by her mother, Lisa A., nee Bourland Brock; her father, Gregory D. Maki; and her sister, Savannah Maki. She is also survived by loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
