Alford graduated from Doherty High School in Colorado Springs, Colorado, after moving there from Kent, Ohio, during his Senior year.
He played for Colorado State from 1987 to 1990 and has a successful coaching history under top coaches such as Dan McCarney, Steve Kragthorpe, Rick Neuheisel, Charlie Weis, Brian Kelly, and Urban Meyer.
