Niyah Devine, a 14 year old North Carolina eighth-grader has been shot to death in Raleigh apartment
Officers responded to The Trails of North Hills Apartments in the 1900 block of North Hills Drive off Lead Mine Road around 2:30 a.m.
Upon arrival, they found Niyah Devine already dead with injuries from a gunshot.
A spokesperson for the family of the girl, who was an 8th grader, stated that the apartment where the incident occurred was described as a “party house.”
It was clarified that she did not reside in the apartment where her body was discovered.
One building was cordoned off with crime scene tape, and police officers were canvassing neighbors’ residences at 3 a.m. as part of their investigation.
Several hours later, the area remained active with law enforcement activity.
“I think they’re devastated. I think they’re confused and hurt overall,” said advocate Kim Muckatarian with Save Our Sons. “No mother wants to hear this. No one wants to hear their child, this young, could be a victim of gun violence.”
Muckatarian said this painful experience of a young, Black child being lost to gun violence is a struggle and fear in the Black community.
“These battles did just not happen yesterday,” she added.
Crime scene tape surrounded one building, and police officers were knocking on neighbors’ doors at 3 a.m. as part of the investigation.
Eight hours later, police were still on the scene investigating.
There are no details from police yet on the circumstances surrounding the shooting. No suspects are in custody.
