A woman in her mid-40s, identified as Johnnetta Smith, was pronounced dead after an apparent domestic shooting in Peoria, Illinois.
The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday in the East Bluff neighborhood near Republic Street and Wisconsin Avenue, according to the Peoria Police Department.

Peoria Police Chief Eric Echevarria confirmed that the shooting appears to be a domestic incident.
Although specific details about the circumstances remain limited, the police chief has acknowledged that the case is being actively investigated.

Gunfire Detection System
The Peoria County Coroner, Jamie Harwood, reported that the ShotSpotter gunfire detection system alerted authorities to the incident location.
This technology, designed to detect and report gunshots in real-time, assists law enforcement in responding to violent incidents more rapidly.
Upon receiving the alert, officers responded to the area and located Smith, who was critically injured.
Medical Response and Fatality
Smith was taken to OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center, where medical staff worked to treat her injuries.
Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital. Coroner Harwood stated that more information would be released following an autopsy, scheduled for Monday, and once her family has been notified.
