Even though Black Panther dropped months ago and has already been watched several times over, we still can’t seem to get enough of it. Which is why it’s so great that Marvel keeps giving us more, with the release of cartoons and even deleted scenes.
While we wouldn’t have minded if the film went on for another two and a half hours, the film’s editor, Michael Shawver revealed that there were a few scenes that were difficult to cut out of the film. One of them being an emotional exchange between Zuri and T’Challa.
While we got a general knowledge of the shared backstory between T’Challa’s father, T’Chaka and Zuri (Forest Whitaker), a newly-released deleted scene has given us even more context. This brief scene sees T’Challa and Zuri reminiscing about T’Chaka, where T’Challa speaks about his father’s super strength, and Zuri talks about how T’Chaka teased him about his weight.
Speaking to The Wrap about this scene, Michael Shawver said:
“There’s a scene between Chadwick and Forest’s characters which sets up their relationship. It sort of lets you attach yourself to their father-son dynamic so that later on in the film, you really feel more.”
Had this scene made the final cut, the tragic death of Zuri by Killmonger would have been more deeply felt. This scene and another powerful one between W’kabi and Okoye will be added in the home version of Black Panther, which will be available for digital download from May 8 and DVD from May 15.
