Zaila, who was born and raised in Harvey, Louisiana, is an American by birth, but she is of African and American descent by ethnicity.
Regarding her family background, Zaila was born to her parents, Alma Heard (her mother) and Jawara Spacetime (her father).
Her father gave her the last name Avant-garde in tribute to his favorite album by musician John Coltrane of the same name.
Avante-garde is homeschooled by her parents, along with her three brothers.
She began to practice dribbling a basketball when she was five and became interested in achieving a World Record when given a Guinness Book for her eighth birthday.

The only Black winner before her was Jody-Anne Maxwell, representing Jamaica in 1998.
Guinness World Record
Avant-garde also a talented basketball player with three Guinness World Records in dribbling.
On 14 November 2019, (which happened to be our annual Guinness World Records Day), Zaila accomplished her goal and set a new record with 231 bounce juggles.
