The woman had called the police at 4 a.m. on Monday, saying that Bulgars had attacked her and her husband.
She claimed that she was sleeping in their child’s bedroom, not the master bedroom, and that she managed to flee with their 20-month-old child.
She said her husband had stayed behind in the house in Rosendaël in the North and fought the burglars.
The police found the professor’s body in a bedroom upstairs. He had been stabbed about a dozen times in the neck, chest and stomach.
The police also recovered two knives with blood on them, a pair of gloves, a flashlight and a laptop near the couple’s house.
Several clues had aroused the suspicion of the investigators: a cut on the woman’s left hand that matched a glove found at the scene and some contradictions in her story.
