What Happened on Canfield Mountain

On June 29, 2025, around 2:00 p.m. PDT, a wildfire began on Canfield Mountain in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

Officials say Wess Roley, age 20, started the fire to lure firefighters to the scene and then ambushed them with a high-powered rifle.

Firefighters arrived and reported they were under fire shortly after responding. Two firefighters died on site.

A third was seriously injured, underwent surgery, and was reported stable.

Law enforcement responded in force. Around 300 officers, including SWAT, FBI, and aerial units, surrounded the mountain.

They used cellphone tracking to locate Roley.

Around 7:40 p.m., SWAT found Roley dead with a firearm beside him.
