The minister-designate for communication, Madam Ursula Owusu Ekuful has raised a major concern of sexual harassment faced by women in politics in the country.
She noted the increasing cases of sexual harassment are worrying and need critical attention from stakeholders.
Addressing the appointment committee of parliament at her vetting, Madam Owusu, known for her usually hard demeanor said the increasing cases of women who face sexual harassment issues compel most of them to remain dormant without growing or leading to the fear of facing such proposals.
She indicated that it even worrying for female politicians because females constitute a higher proportion of the population but are not highly represented because most of them have to deal with these issues, which when you speak outdrives the impression of a disrespectful figure in the eyes of society.
“Fundraising exposes women in politics to all manner of dangers when people make some advances to you merely because you’re going to seek resources to finance your campaign. It is something that we all need to look at and design and fashion our policies to make it easier for women to engage in politics. You end up having to develop a very very thick skin and you are labeled as arrogant because you speak your mind”, she said.
She asked major stakeholders involved to look at the issue critically so a roadmap of solving the issue can be drawn because women also have a lot to offer should they be allowed to partake in administrative roles.
