The talk of an a possible all-English final now looks nothing more than a dream as Ajax put up a resilient performance away at the new Tottenham Hotspur stadium while Barcelona turned on the style against Liverpool at the Camp Nou.
Tottenham vs Ajax
Ajax continued to warm themselves up to many neutral football fans with yet another brilliant away win. This might not be as huge a performance as the ones at the Santiago Bernabeu and Juventus Stadium but it was nothing short of exceptional. Danny Van De Beek’s 14th minute goal was enough to seal the win as Spurs -who were without strikers Harry Kane and Heung Min-Son- struggled to break through the Ajax rearguard.
Ajax now take a huge away win to the Johan Cryuff Arena and surely, this feels like they have one foot in the final.
Barcelona vs Liverpool
Suarez’s first half goal calmed Barça’s nerves in an evenly contested first half with both sides getting some good opportunities.
Liverpool controlled the majority of the second half and for a spell, pinned Barça back but when Messi scored to make it 2-0, the game looked to be over for them. Then, the moment of brilliance when he struck a 30-yard free kick into the top corner, way beyond Liverpool goalkeeper Allison’s reach.
In the end, Liverpool will rue a missed opportunity to get a valuable away goal late on. Barcelona could have and should have also had at least one more goal but that takes away nothing from this result.
