We’re still trying to figure out if Kanye West’s recent announcement to run for president in the 2020 election is the real deal. The rapper shared his high hopes for the White House during an acceptance speech at the VMAs on Sunday night. Some are saying that if Donald Trump can lead a campaign, then why not the strongly opinionated music star?

A White House representative recently responded to West’s bid in a statement to Billboard magazine. White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said he looks “forward to seeing what slogan he chooses to embroider on his campaign hat.”

The rapper also has some legitimate supporters who are excited about what West can bring to the table in a future election. Chairman of the Young Minority Republican Fund Eugene Craig took action and immediately registered on Monday. He also registered the Ready for Kanye political action committee with the Federal Election Commission.

“If Kanye is going to run in 2020, I would love to see him run in a Republican primary,” Craig said to “He brings a lot to the discussion that’s missing.”

Craig also said West would make a great Republican candidate because he values small businesses and entrepreneurship and has spoken out “against the war on drugs and the pipeline that the war on drugs provides to the private prison systems.”

Whether this is a publicity stunt or a serious move to lead the free world, it’s clear West will have followers in his corner pushing to get him in the Oval Office.
