Sonotech Medical And Diagnostic Center Launch Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Sonotech Medical and Diagnostic Center has launched the breast cancer awareness month on October 1st 2020 at their Tema branch.

The launch of this year’s awareness month is in line with intensifying the campaign against breast cancer in Ghana with the theme; ‘detect it, treat it and defeat it’.

The program was attended by health personnels, a section of the media and a few stakeholders.

Giving a talk on breast cancer, Dr. Josephine Nsaful, a general surgeon with the Breast Surgery Unit of the Korle-bu Teaching Hospital noted that breast cancer is the commonest female cancer.

She indicated that statistics from the World Health Organisation indicates that there has been an increase in cases globally, a rather alarming turn of events.

She however noted that most cases recorded in Ghana are reported after stage 3, making it quite difficult to treat and totally defeat it.

“The thing is, the incidence is actually going up. If you look at the WHO statistics, in 2012, there was almost 1.7 million cases and now for 2018 that is almost 2.1 million. In 2012, they said that we were diagnosing 2000 new cases in Ghana but in 2018, the estimate from WHO states that we were diagnosing over 4000 cases and close to 2000 people die a year from breast cancer in Ghana”.

Dr. Josephine Nsaful established that early detection is key, stating that breast cancer is curable once reported early enough. She asked ladies especially to regularly scan their breasts and report any form of lamp or irregularity to the nearest hospital before it gets late.

The Medical director for Sonotech Medical and Diagnostic Center, Dr. Grace Buckman in highlighting the program line up for the awareness month said there will be a lot of social media awareness due to the incidence of the COVID 19. She stated that the mediums will be on Facebook, Instagram, and other social media platforms.

She further added that the Sonotech Medical Centers in Tema and Osu is open for free screening in the month of October. Also, there is a 50% discount on ultra scan (Ghc 200 now Ghc 100) for the month of October to enable people patronise the early detection approach.
