Sgt Dale Nix: Who was Greensboro police officer & what happened at Sheetz gas station?

An off-duty Greensboro police officer who was shot & killed at Sheetz gas station has been identified as Sgt. Dale Nix.

Sgt. Dale Nix was a veteran and served 22 years with the police department and in his community.

He was the current supervisor of the Greensboro Police Department’s Family Victims Unit.

Sergeant Nix has been a member of the Greensboro Police Department since September 1998 when he joined as a non-sworn Police Telecommunicator (911 Dispatch).

He became a sworn Police Officer in June 2001 and has worked throughout the department as a Police Training Officer, Financial Crimes Detective, Corporal and Sergeant.

Sergeant Nix has a Bachelor of Arts Degree from UNCG and is a Certified Instructor with the State of NC.

He has been a member of the US Secret Service Financial Crimes Task Force, the U.S. Attorney’s Identity Theft Task Force and has had training in Sexual Assault Investigation and is one of the Guilford County’s leading experts on Non-Fatal Strangulation Investigation.

Sergeant Nix has received his Department’s Superior Service Bar, Certificate of Merit and Meritorious Unit Award.

He was also awarded the Greensboro Merchant Association’s Crime Prevention Award, the NC State Credit Union Scholarship, and has his Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate.

What happened?

Greensboro police said Sgt Dale Nix was shot after witnessing a crime at the Sheetz on Sandy Ridge Road Saturday afternoon.

Police said he was shot after approaching the suspects.

They said another off-duty officer and a Guilford County paramedic tried to save the officer’s life but he later died at a hospital.

Search for suspects

Police said they’re searching for two suspects who were last seen traveling toward I-40 West in a Chevrolet Equinox with the North Carolina tag KKA-4332.

Officials said one suspect was wearing a black hoodie and black sweatpants with black shoes, with a green/gray toboggan and the other suspect was wearing a jean jacket with fur and gray sweatpants, with tennis shoes.
