A 21-year-old man faces murder charges in a Saturday night shooting at a Huntsville restaurant that left one dead and two injured.

Jeremiah Matkins of Huntsville was arrested and charged with murder in the death of Ray’shun Markelle Bates, 23, of Decatur, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said Sunday.

“He has been booked into the Madison County Jail with a $50,000 bond,” ALEA added.

The shooting occurred around 10 p.m. Saturday at Twin Peaks restaurant on University Drive after a verbal exchange among several individuals escalated.

“A uniformed Huntsville Police Department officer was working a departmentally approved off-duty security job for the business when the shooting occurred,” the agency stated. “The officer discharged his weapon; however, no individuals were struck by the officer’s gunfire.”

Two people suffered injuries from the incident and were taken to the hospital, according to ALEA.

Investigation is continuing and the law enforcement agency is not releasing further information.
