A man was killed and another person was hurt in an early Saturday shooting in the village of Eau Claire.
Around 12:45 a.m., deputies with the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office were sent to the area of Main Street and Elm Street for a shooting. Responding deputies found two men with apparent gunshot wounds. One was unresponsive. Both were taken to the hospital.
The man who was unresponsive died at the hospital, the sheriff’s office said. Authorities on Sunday identified him as Chad Medlin, 36, of Benton Harbor.
The other man’s injuries are not considered life-threatening.
Deputies quickly identified a suspect, Rigoberto Gomez, 47, of Eau Claire, and took him into custody. He was booked into the Berrien County Jail on multiple charges.
Medlin was a Eau Claire firefighter, the fire department confirmed in a Facebook post Saturday.
