Paul Kutz, a 53 year old father-of-three who was visiting his son at a special Family Weekend at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York, was shot dead when he was caught in the crossfire as bullets flew in the lobby of the Courtyard by Marriott Poughkeepsie hotel where he was staying.
Paul Kutz, from East Northport on New York’s Long Island was caught in the mayhem of the shootout at the hotel in Poughkeepsie.
The Marriott Poughkeepsie hotel shooting incident suddenly began after a suspect got into an argument with workers at the hotel as he was in the lobby getting coffee on Sunday at 7.30am.
Two homeless men who are believed to have gang ties were arrested following the shooting with police reporting finding bomb-making equipment and together with a ‘ghost gun’ rifle in one of the rooms at the hotel.
The father-of-three boys who had been married for 27 years, was shot in the chest and torso by bullets fired during a fight.
Kutz, who ran an accounting firm alongside his brother for the last 32 years, was rushed to MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie, where he was pronounced dead.
Two male suspects were staying at the hotel and were arrested at the scene. Both have prior criminal records.
Roy Johnson Jr., 35 — who is accused of pulling the trigger — was charged with second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, according to the Journal.
Devin Taylor, 26, was also arrested on charges of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon for carrying a loaded rifle with no serial number.
Who was Paul Kutz?
Paul Kutz, who was an accountant, was married to Nathalie Landrein Kutz since 1995.
Together the couple had three sons, one of whom he had been visiting at Marist College when the shooting broke out.
Kutz graduated from the College of Holy Cross, a liberal arts college in Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1990 with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Economics. He then went on to receive a Master’s degree in taxation in 1993.
He received his Certified Public Accountant license in 1991 and had held a Certified Financial Planner license since 1997.
