Ohio University rewards Anas with African Hero honour


The Ohio University African Students’ Union (ASU) has decorated Africa’s investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas with the African Hero of the year honour 2016 at a colourful ceremony held in Athens Ohio, USA.

Madam Saba Zewdu, the President of OU African Students Union, in presenting the award, said the African Students Union had followed the works of the Hero, Mr Anas closely and were proud of his achievements.

Speaking at the award ceremony, Anas Aremyaw Anas told the OU audience of students, Professors and administrators that his style of journalism is to name, shame and jail culprits involved in wrong doing in the community.

“I refuse to let anyone dictate to me the tenets of what journalism is about. I define my own journalism according the demands of the community in which I reside and serve,” he said.

He blended his speech with snippets of several of his investigative videos.

The African Hero award was established in 1991 to commemorate the release of Nelson Mandela, the former President of South Africa and seeks to award individuals whose works have impacted positively on the lives of Africans around the world.

With his Award, Anas Aremeyaw Anas has joined the tall list of celebrated Africans such as Professor Francis Nyamnjoh, a Cameroonian scholar, novelist and publisher, Professor Frimpong Boateng, Ghana’s renowned Heart surgeon, Dr Philistine Onyango from Kenya and Professor Steve Howard, an Africanist Media professor who is also the director of Ohio university’s Center for International Studies who have been honored by OU.
