A 19-year-old Woodville woman Niyah Williams died after being shot in the head late Tuesday night, prompting Jasper police to arrest a 23-year-old man in connection with the shooting.
Jasper officers were sent to Christus Jasper Memorial Hospital just before midnight on Tuesday night, May 27, 2025, after hospital staff reported that a 19-year-old woman had been admitted with a gunshot wound to the head, according to a news release from the Jasper Police Department.
Despite life-saving efforts by medical personnel, the woman was pronounced dead shortly after she arrived at the hospital, the release said.
A 23-year-old Woodville man was at the hospital when officers arrived and was taken into custody without incident. Police have not yet released his name. He is facing arraignment on a manslaughter charge according to police.
The man is currently being held at the Jasper County Jail on the pending manslaughter charge and is cooperating with detectives, according to police.
Investigators have recovered the firearm believed to be involved in the shooting. The case remains under active investigation, with a formal autopsy pending.
Police have not disclosed the relationship between the victim and suspect or provided details about what led to the shooting.
