A woman was hit and killed by a police vehicle near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on Thursday, according to the Horry County Police Department.
The coroner identified the victim as 66-year-old Sandra “Sandy” Schultz-Peters, who lived in Myrtle Beach.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol said Schultz-Peters was on the beach near Nash Street around 1 p.m. Thursday.
That is just south of Myrtle Beach city limits.
She was facing east, and a 2020 Ford Ranger was going north on the sand when the vehicle hit the victim, troopers said.
Schultz-Peters was taken to Grand Strand Regional Hospital and died a short time later.
The Horry County Police Department released information on Friday morning about the case.
A statement said the Ford Ranger was a Horry County Police Department vehicle and the officer involved is now on administrative leave.
“What occurred on the beach yesterday was a tragedy and we know our community is hurting,” the statement read. “Our hearts are with all those impacted by this loss.”
The department said the South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating and there will also be an internal investigation.
