A 22 year old mother identified as Myra Santiago has been arrested after Aziryh Santiago, her 3-year-old son drowned in Volusia County pond.
According to Ormond Beach police, Aziryh Santiago drowned in a pond at the San Marco Apartments complex on North Williamson Boulevard.
Someone at the apartments called the police around 1:45 p.m. after spotting the boy in the water.
The arrest report says 22-year-old Myra Santiago, the 3-year-old’s mother, failed to ensure the front door of her apartment was locked.
The child walked out of the apartment and was alone for about eight hours before drowning in the pond, according to the arrest report.
A closer look at the police report shows Santiago tried messaging a neighbor on Facebook asking her to tell police she watched her son. She also added she was freaking out and that she would “tell her about everything later.”
That neighbor showed the messages to police and said she’s never watched Santiago’s son.
Ultimately, police say they confronted her about those messages she sent to her neighbor. She responded, “Why are they asking things they already knew?” before asking to leave.
Charges against Myra Santiago
Santiago is in jail now.
Court records say she will see a judge at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Ormond Beach police say Santiago is facing the charges of aggravated manslaughter of a child and neglect of a child.
