Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Virgil Van Dijk have been nominated for the UEFA player of the year award.
The three players have had amazing seasons in their own right and somewhat are deserving of the player of the year award.
Lionel Messi finished topscorer in Europe’s top 5 leagues yet again as Barcelona won La Liga in emphatic fashion.
He also finished as the topscorer in the UEFA champions league and scored twice in the semi final first leg 3-0 win vs Liverpool.
Barcelona however crashes out at that stage as eventual winners Liverpool mounted an incredible comeback to defeat the Catalan giants and knoco them out.
Cristiano Ronaldo, in his first year at Juventus after his £105m move from Real Madrid was named MVP of the Italian Serie A, leading the line as Juventus won an incredible 8th straight Serie A title.
In the Champions League, Ronaldo’s best moment of the season came in the round of 16 return leg.
With Juventus down 0-2 in the first leg, Ronaldo scored a hattrick in the second leg to give Juve a 3-0 win and secure qualification to the next round.
Juventus however lost the quarter final tie 3-2 (agg) and crashed out of the competition.
Ronaldo finished the season with success in the maiden edition of the UEFA nations league as Portugal defeated Netherlands 1-0 in the final.
Ronaldo’s hattrick in the semi final against Switzerland was also a highlight of an incredible season for the 5 time winner of the award.
The third candidate, Liverpool’s Virgil Van Dijk is making his first appearance in the 3 man shortlist.
The Dutch captain had by far his best ever season in professional football as he won the UEFA champions league with Liverpool.
Van Dijk was also named PFA player of the year as Liverpool lost the league narrowly to Manchester City.
He also reached the UEFA nations league final with Netherlands but lost the final 1-0 to Portugal.
Both Messi and Ronaldo have all been nominated for the forward of the year award while Virgil Van Dijk also has been nominated for the Defender of the year award.
The award ceremony will be held on the 29th of August, the same day as the draw for the group stage of the 2019/2020 UEFA Champions League
