Matthew Rhoden: Shreveport police officer killed, another injured in two-vehicle crash

An off-duty Shreveport Police officer killed in a motor vehicle collision in west Shreveport has been named by the Caddo Parish Coroner’s office.

Matthew Rhoden, 37, died in the wreck that occurred at 2 p.m. Friday, September 27, 2024 at West 70th Street and Pines Road.

According to SPD Public Information Officer Angie Wilhite, two vehicles were involved in the crash.

Officers responded to reports of a major wreck in the 6500 block of West 70th St. near the KOA Campground at about 2 p.m.

One vehicle, a blue sportscar was in the ditch and a white van was in the road.

Wilhite said that two SPD officers were in one of the vehicles. Matthew Rhoden died on the scene and the other was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

He was positively identified through fingerprint comparison.

The driver of the white van is not believed to be injured.

Louisiana State Police and Shreveport Fire Department are on the scene along with 12 police vehicles.

“We ask everyone to pray for our department and these officers,” Wilhite said.

The wreck remains under investigation by the Shreveport Police Department.

An autopsy was ordered.
