A 24-year-old Hanover man faced stalking charges after he was seen one day before Wednesday’s fatal police shooting in camouflage with an AR-15 style rifle slung across his chest, court records show.
The man, Matthew James Ruth, 24, was identified as the suspect in the shootings by a law enforcement official. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to discuss an ongoing investigation.
Ruth’s case is now listed as “inactive,” according to the court docket. Pennsylvania State Police, meanwhile, continued to investigate the North Codorus Township shooting that killed three York County police officers and left two others in critical condition.
Court documents show that Matthew J. Ruth was charged after an incident that took place around 11:23 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, in the 1800 block of Haar Road in North Codorus Township.
A woman told police she saw a man on her property that a man was on her property with binoculars peering into the residence, court records from Tuesday’s incident show. The woman reported she could see the man, later identified as Ruth, standing in her driveway wearing camouflage.
CNN reported that a man wearing camouflage reportedly opened fire Wednesday afternoon on the officers from a nearby cornfield with a rifle. The suspected shooter was killed by police in return fire.
