MARTA Bus Driver Leroy Ramos Killed Over $2.50 Fare Dispute in Decatur

MARTA Bus Driver Leroy Ramos

DECATUR, Ga. — A MARTA bus driver lost his life in a tragic shooting Friday evening, stemming from a disagreement over a $2.50 fare.

According to MARTA Police Chief Scott Kreher, the incident occurred shortly after 6:30 p.m. at the Decatur Station.

The situation began as a physical altercation between the driver and three individuals, which escalated into gunfire.

One suspect pulled out a handgun and shot the driver three times before fleeing the scene with the other two suspects.

Emergency responders rushed the driver to a nearby hospital, but he later passed away. MARTA police have arrested two suspects and are actively searching for the third individual, who is believed to have fired the fatal shots.

“We’ve launched a full investigation, using drone technology and K-9 units to locate the remaining suspect,” Kreher stated. Although video footage of the incident exists, it will not be released during the active investigation.

Kreher expressed his condolences and frustration, noting, “This $2.50 fare dispute has taken the life of one of our operators—a senseless and heartbreaking loss.”

The driver, identified as Leroy Ramos, was a father of three and had been with MARTA for only a few months.

Ramos recently relocated to Atlanta from New York, seeking a stable future for his family.

In response to this tragedy, the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 732 called for increased security measures to protect transit workers and passengers. “Our members deserve to feel safe at work. It’s time for MARTA to step up and ensure safety for everyone using the system,” said Local 732 President Britt Dunams.

This shooting highlights growing concerns about transit worker safety. Less than a month ago, a similar incident claimed the life of a bus driver in Seattle.

Advocates are pushing for stricter protections and improved security across all public transit systems.

As police continue their search for the final suspect, MARTA and local authorities urge anyone with information to come forward.
