Thirty-Eight (38) year-old Ghanaian Heptathlete, Margaret Simpson has won a gold medal for the country at the ongoing West Africa University Games in Port Harcourt Nigeria, Head of Sports at Atinka Media, Saddick Adams affectionately called Sports Obama has revealed.
According to him, Margaret won the gold medal in Women Javelin with a distance of 47 meters
Margaret who is competing for the University of Cape Coast is the oldest athlete and has also won Silver in Shot put with a distance of 11:23meters
It would be recalled that the athlete a week ago, was in the news after she claimed that the Ministry of Youth and Sports is indebted to her after she won Gold at the African Championship at Porto Novo in Benin 6 years ago but is yet to receive her prize money.
The sad story of Margaret is one that sends tears down the cheeks from anyone as the award-winning athlete has resorted to hawking and selling cooking oil on the streets of Ejisu in the Ashanti Region to make a living since that remains her only hope to feed the several mouths in her home.
But sources at the Ministry of Youth and Sports said it is not indebted to Ghana’s best Heptathlete, Margaret Simpson as she claimed.
According to the source that spoke on grounds of strict anonymity, Margaret Simpson has no record to prove that the Ministry owed her as claimed in the interview she granted a week ago.
“She doesn’t have any proof. It is alleged to have happened under NDC. We have asked her to engage and show some evidence but nothing has come up. The issue is this, it is not about emotion and propaganda. The Minister has confirmed to me he engaged her But the government does not make commitments based on hearsay”, the source revealed.
