Suspect in stolen vehicle crashes, killing woman in northeast Wichita

Police say a suspect in a stolen vehicle crashed into a car in northeast Wichita, killing Mandy Lynn Buckwalter, the 43-year-old woman who was driving.

On Monday morning, officers located a stolen vehicle at the River Walk Apartments on South Emporia. Capt. Aaron Moses with the Wichita Police Department said officers followed in an unmarked vehicle, and it appeared the suspects were unaware that they were being followed.

WPD requested air support from the Kansas Highway Patrol.

At around noon, the suspect vehicle stopped at the Walmart at 29th and Rock Road.

“In an attempt to keep the stolen vehicle from leaving Walmart, officers deployed spike strips that deflated two tires,” Capt. Moses said. “The suspect vehicle was able to flee the Walmart, and a police vehicle was struck in the process. Officers did not pursue the vehicle at that time.

Moses said KHP air support followed the vehicle from above. The vehicle went to a business on Webb near 35th Street, where two people fled.

One was later taken into custody. Moses said a female suspect stole another vehicle from the business and fled south on Webb and then west on 29th. KHP air support continued to follow.

The stolen transit van struck a Chevy Cobalt at 29th and Wilderness. The woman driving, Mandy Lynn Buckwalter of Hutchinson, was killed, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol crash log.

A 24-year-old suspect, identified in the crash log as Katelyn Barrioz, was taken to a local hospital for treatment. She did not appear in Sedgwick County Jail records Tuesday morning.

The investigation is ongoing with the assistance of the Kansas Highway Patrol.
