Manchester City Clinch Community Shield

Gabriel Jesus’ penalty saw Liverpool lose 4-5 on penalties in the Community Shield as City clinch the 2019 Community Shield.

Pep Guardiola has won his 5th straight Domestic trophy with City once again showing clear intent in their dominance.

Liverpool set up with both Firmino and Salah starting upon return from holiday with Sadio Mane still out.

City , on the other hand played in a similar way they have been all pre season with Raheem Sterling playing in a False 9 role.

The game began with City enjoying the early exchanges and making good strides early on with De Bruyne and Sterling looking the liveliest on the pitch.

City got in behind the Liverpool defence a few times as the reds looked jaded and in pre season.

It took 12 minutes for City to score, as a freekick not properly dealt with by Liverpool saw Sterling poke it home via an Allison howler.

After the goal, Liverpool had an opportunity to go level with both Salah and Firmino going close on separate occasions.

Firmino, upon returning from Copa America triumph with Brazil last month wasn’t at his sharp best.

The first half saw City further dominate Liverpool and had the best of chances as they held on to the first half lead.

The second half began with City still controlling possession as new signing Rodri, from Atletico Madrid kept things ticking in front of the defence and linking up play very well.

The young Spaniard, making his debut , did not look a second out of place.

Soon, Liverpool, in search of the equaliser began to increase the tempo and move into 5th gear.

Two unlucky moments for the reds saw Salah and Van Dijk hit the woodwork in the search for an equaliser.

Salah tried several shots but was either denied by the woodwork or Claudio Bravo in post for City.

Liverpool got the equaliser however, but it was their CBs who combined perfectly, with Van Dijk linking up with Matip to give them the equaliser.

With a minute to go, Walker acrobatically cleared Salah’s goal bound header off the line in what was supposed to be the match winner.

The game had to be decided on penalties. City scored all 5 of their kicks but Wijnaldum’s miss meant Liverpool missed out yet again to Manchester City.

Once again, City clinch a trophy of Liverpool. After last season’s Champions League triumph, Virgil Van Dijk said Liverpool are just beginning and aren’t going anywhere soon.

From what we saw, it doesn’t look like Manchester City are going anywhere either.
