Liverpool showed outstanding spirit to put aside a very stubborn Newcastle side who wouldn’t go down without a fight.
The Belgian came on as a 73rd minute substitute for the injured Mohammed Salah, before nodding in from a Xherdan Shaqiri free kick.
Liverpool started the game in fine spirits and took the lead in the 14th minute through PFA player of the year, Virgil Van Dijk. Newcastle levelled through Christian Atsu in the 20th minute. That only lasted for 8 minutes as Mohammed Salah’s 22nd league goal of the season gave the reds a 2-1 advantage at the interval.
However, Newcastle came out after the break in search of an equalizer and got it through Salomon Rondon in the 54th minute. The next 32 minutes was a test of nerves for Liverpool as they huffed and puffed for the all important winner. Origi’s goal takes them to 94 points and 2 ahead of city.
With City not playing till Monday, Liverpool sit at the top of the table for now as Pep Guardiola and his charges will look to once again take another step over them on Monday.
