In 2001, Lee Jung Jae was discovered by designer Ha Yong-soo at a café in Apgujeong while working as a model.
In 1993, Lee made his acting debut with the television drama Dinosaur Teacher, and he was almost always cast in leading roles after that.
Following that role, he had a major role in Bae Chang-ho’s The Young Man the following year, but it was the hit drama Feelings in 1994 that made him a household name.
In 1995, Lee, who had been cast in a supporting role as the heroine’s silent, devoted bodyguard, became a national sensation on Sandglass, which prompted the show’s producers to increase Lee’s screen time.
- Popularity and breakout roles
Lee’s first major acting role came with the award-winning film An Affair by E J-yong at the end of 1998. He then went on to win Best Actor at the Blue Dragon Film Awards and the Korean Association of Film Critics awards for City of the Rising Sun.
He appeared in the 2003 Korean film Oh! Brothers, a comedy centered on a pair of brothers with an unusual condition.
Upon its release, the film broke three million admission records at the local box office.
Following his absence for a couple of years, Kwak Kyung-taek, the director of Friend, finally brought him back to the limelight with Typhoon, a big-budget action blockbuster.
Lee starred in the 2019 occult film Svaha: The Sixth Finger.
In the same year, Lee was cast in his first drama in a decade, Chief of Staff, a JTBC political drama in which he plays a political advisor.
In September 2021, Lee appeared as the main character in Squid Game, a Netflix survival drama.
