The Member of Parliament for Asawase constituency, Honourable Mubarak Muntaka has said that the NPP leader in parliament failed his side in the election of the Speaker of Parliament.

The 8th parliament elected Right Honourable Alban Bagbin on 7th January, 2021 after a long proceeding of back and forth during the election process. This is the first time in the history of the 4th republic that the Speaker of Parliament position will be given to an opposition member of parliament.

In an interview granted by Honourable Kyei Mensah Bonsu to a Kumasi based radio station, he alleged that he had information that the NDC was planning on bribing some members of the NPP to vote for Bagbin and called them to rescind on their decision to do so but it fell on deaf ears. In another interview, he said that the Speaker of Parliament position was conferred on Bagbin after Crlos Ahenkorah’s incidence in order to pave way for the swearing in of President Akuffo Addo and to foster peace between the two parties in the house.

Reacting to Kyei Mensah Bonsu’s statement in an interview, the Asawase MP described the statements of his colleague in parliament as false and said they hold no stand. He added that Kyei Mensah failed his side in parliament by not preparing them for the election, when they the NDC fully prepared their side. He said;

“Kyei Mensah Bonsu failed his side. When we told him you’re not reaching out to us, looking at the number we have he was just calling us bluff. While we were planning and strategizing.”
