Kamari Hampton: How NYPD Tow Truck driver struck and killed a young boy in Fort Greene

Kamari Hampton

A New York Police Department tow truck driver has been arrested and charged with failure to exercise due care after striking and killing a 7-year-old boy in Fort Greene on Thursday morning.

The boy, identified as Kamari Hampton, was crossing the intersection of Myrtle Avenue and North Portland Avenue on his scooter when he was hit by the truck.

Witnesses say Hampton’s mother, who was pushing a stroller behind him, broke down into hysterics.

However, witnesses claim the truck made it about 100 feet down the street and had to be flagged down before stopping.

Police say the driver immediately stopped.

Hampton was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

Kamari Hampton, 7, lived in the Whitman Houses.

For most of the day Thursday, heartbroken neighbors congregated outside.

A memorial slowly took form at the intersection where the young boy’s life was taken.

The horrible tragedy has struck a chord with local leaders and residents who are calling for increased safety measures.

Several crossing guards could be seen at the intersection Friday morning.
