A Russell County sheriff’s deputy is dead after a shooting.
The Russell County Fiscal Court confirmed on Facebook that Sheriff’s Deputy Josh Phipps was killed in the line of duty Monday evening.
The incident occurred in Russell Springs, Kentucky, near Bluebird Drive.
Deputy Phipps was responding as backup during an active shooter situation when he was struck by gunfire.
He was taken to Russell County Hospital, where he unfortunately passed away.
The City of Russell Springs posted a statement from Mayor Eddie Thomas on Facebook, saying that their community has “suffered a great loss” and asks that you please “keep our town, our county, and all of our first responders in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

There are police from several agencies on the scene of the shooting, along with Kentucky State Police.
