Police are investigating a fatal stabbing and fire at a home in Chicago.
They say a woman allegedly stabbed three children, killing one, before setting the house on fire.
A plume of smoke was seen billowing from a home in Logan Square where, inside, police said the 45-year-old woman’s rampage against the three kids took place.
“It was devastating. You never want to hear that anyone’s life is taken, especially a child,” Angie Perez, a neighbor, said.
Police said a medical emergency call initially sent officers to the home shortly after 9 a.m. on July Fourth. Officers then came upon a working fire that hid a bloody scene inside.
“I got this child yelling for help out the basement window,” an unknown officer is heard saying. “We’re trying to get her out of the window. I do see blood.”
Investigators said the children were stabbed multiple times, including a 4-year-old identified as Jordan Wallace by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Police said he was stabbed in his chest and died at the hospital.
A 13-year-old girl sustained critical injuries to her face, chest, and back, and a 10-year-old boy was left with a stab wound to his right arm.
“It’s sad because today is a day of celebration. It’s sad,” Juan Miranda, another neighbor, said.
The fire started in the home and spread next door, damaging the roof and leaving two people hospitalized with smoke inhalation.
Police said three officers were also treated for breathing in too much smoke.
“These lives are ruined, you know. There’s no happiness from here on for them. Any kind of tragedy, it trumps any kind of happiness in the future,” Perez said.
The woman was taken into custody.
Police would not confirm a relationship between the suspect and three children, but said the incident was domestic in nature.
