Ghanaian striker, Jordan Ayew, has been named Crystal Palace’s player of the month for the month of August.
It’s been a dream start to the season for Jordan Ayew , as the 28-year old scored 2 crucial goals in wins against Aston Villa at home and a first win in the premier league at Old Trafford against Manchester United.
Jordan built on his fantastic form at the just ended AFCON 2019 where he was undoubtedly Ghana’s best player at the tournament.
On receiving the award, Ayew was full of praise for his teammates.
“I want to thank them, and everyone at the football club. I am grateful and this is a good thing, but it is just the beginning. It gives me more energy and desire to work harder for this football club.”
“My target was to start well. Thank god everything went well. I need to continue, do better and work harder,”he continued.
He was however cautious and down to earth as he vowed to remain focused and build on his good start.
“We are happy [as a squad], but we all know that it’s still the beginning and we have a lot of games to go, so we know that there are important games coming up, and we need to keep our focus and keep working hard.”
Palace Coach Roy Hodgson has in the past expressed excitement at the progress Ayew has made since he made his loan move permanent.
“Had he not scored the goal today, I would still be heaping praise on him because of the work he does for us, his tactical understanding, the number of times he does the job we want tactically to help other players take up the positions they need to take up.I’m not just talking attacking-wise, I’m talking defending too”,the palace boss noted after the home win against Aston Villa.
“When he puts icing on that cake by scoring a goal last week and a goal this week, then it’s happy days – there’s no doubt about that. It’s in particular happy days for him and it’s happy days he deserves,” he continued.
Roy Hodgson also praised Ayew’s attitude and hardwork to win back a starting spot after falling out of favor last season.
“Last season, he didn’t get as many opportunities as he would like to have had. There were many times he found himself on the bench as a substitute and wasn’t even getting onto the field of play but never once did he stop working hard in training. Never once did he stop trying to do the right things in training. Players like that, when their moment arrives, as a coach you feel really happy for them.”
Palace return to action on Saturday with a London derby as they travel to north London to face Tottenham Hotspurs at the new Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium.
Ayew will be looking to once again get on the scoresheet as he seeks to continue his brilliant start to the season.
