Professor Joseph Dituri, also known as ‘Dr. Deep Sea,’ has gained widespread recognition for his record-breaking achievement of living underwater without depressurization for an extended period.
Located at a scuba divers’ lodge in the Florida Keys, Dr. Dituri spent an astounding 73 days in an underwater habitat. In an Instagram post on Sunday, the US Navy veteran announced his plans to spend a total of 100 days submerged below the sea’s surface in the pursuit of scientific exploration.
Despite retiring from the Navy after 28 years of active service, Dr. Dituri’s passion for discovery and adventure continues to drive him forward.

Joseph Dituri is a Hyperbaric researcher and biomedical engineer who was enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1985.
He has served continuously on active service upon various ships and shore stations where he was involved in saturation diving and ship repair.
In 1995 he made his way up through the ranks after earning his B.S. in Computer Science from the University of South Carolina and was commissioned into the Special Operations Officer pipeline.
He was a Diving Officer at Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit One and the Operations & Salvage Officer onboard USS Salvor.
Following a change of designator to Engineering Duty Officer (Diving Officer), he served at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard as a Nuclear Project Superintendent, Project Manager, Docking Officer, Diving Officer and Business Operations Officer.
He then transferred to Naval Post Graduate School where he earned his Master’s degree in Astronautical Engineering. His master’s thesis topic was in Orbital Determination. He is an invited speaker on space related topics. During this tour he also completed Saturation Diving Officer school in preparation for his follow on assignment.
As president of the Undersea Oxygen Clinic, Dr. Dituri has applied his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering to the development of a breakthrough treatment for healing Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), and the related symptoms of PTSD, depression, and long-term mental and physical impairments.
