The general captain of the senior national team, the Black Stars, Asamoah Gyan has expressed his disappointment at the coach of the national team, coach Akwasi Appiah for stripping him off the Black stars’ captaincy.
In two explosive interview at the Multimedia head office with local radio stations, Asempa FM and Joy FM, the veteran striker did not hold back as he poured his heart out on issues concerning the national team and the Black Stars’ captaincy issues.
Speaking to Joy FM’s super morning show, Asamoah Gyan said;
“I was very very upset but I wanted to play it safe. I didn’t want to be seen as causing confusion in camp. The timing was wrong. I think it should have come earlier, months before not when the time is near for the tournament“
Gyan ,34, was named captain of the national team in 2012. But after 7 years, he was stripped off the captaincy ahead of the AFCON campaign in 2019.
He then announced his decision to retire before being asked to rescind decision by the President of the land.
However, Gyan reiterated his concerns, saying he felt isolated, forgotten and betrayed by the coach.
Speaking on that, Gyan said,

“I realized I was never in Kwasi Appiah’s for this tournament (AFCON 2019). I have to be real here. I was never in his plans from the look of things around the team and some of his actions. I wasnt in his plans. Period.”
Also speaking to Asempa FM, Gyan said he felt as though he was not allowed to enjoy his tenure as Stars Captain .

“Since I became captain of the Black Stars, I’ve never been allowed to enjoy my reign. Me alone, I never enjoyed my role as a captain. For seven years as a captain, I never enjoyed my tenure. Why. So many hypocrites around never allowed me to enjoy“, he said.
He also said he believes the decision to strip him off the captaincy was not entirely the decision of Coach Akwasi Appiah saying:
” I know the decision to take the captaincy from me was NOT a decision of the coach. He was heavily influenced. I know and I’m very certain this was not his decision. It was a decision taken by some people. I’m not a kid. I know”
His assistant for the last 5 years, Andre Ayew was named substantial captain while Gyan was elevated to the role of General captain.
On his role as general captain, Gyan stated that his duties were not clearly defined and didn’t receive any clear response from the coach when he. asked.
However, he stressed the fact that he had a very good relationship with current captain Andre Ayew saying that they have had series of conversations and both are very cool with each other.
Asamoah Gyan is Ghana’s all time topscorer with 51 goals in 107 games.
