Former Ghana International, Kevin Prince Boateng has spilled the tea on some careless decisions he made in his career.
The 32 year old, who currently plies his trade for Fiorentina in the Serie A opened up in a recent interview talking about his career.
The former AC Milan player, who won the Serie A with the historic club in 2011/2012, can look back at a successful career having been to the very top and represented some top teams in Europe.
Prior to his time at Milan, he spent 4 years in England where he played for Tottenham Hotspurs and Portsmouth. It was during this spell that Boateng bemoans his lack of training and focus.
‘I’ll go back and say: I didn’t treat football as a job,’ he told La Repubblica
‘I was an idiot. I had talent, but I trained the bare minimum, an hour on the field. I was the last to arrive and the first to leave. I’d be out with friends. I had money, I lived like a king. I’d never been to the gym. That changes your later career’.
Boateng’s time in England was during his formative years and the 32 year old clearly admits he could have done better to live up to the potential of his early years at Hertha Berlin.
‘I bought three cars in one day when I was at Tottenham: a Lamborghini, a Hummer and a Cadillac.’, he continued .
Having regretted all these, he advised the upcoming players to do better.
To the youngsters, I tell them: ‘You cannot buy happiness.’ ,Boateng advised.
‘I didn’t play, I had family problems, I was out of the squad. I was looking for happiness in material things: a car makes you happy for a week. I bought three to be happy for three weeks.’, he concluded.
KP Boateng was part of Ghana’s squads for the world cup campaigns of 2010 and 2014 but it was at the 2010 world cup that he warmed up to many Ghanaians.
After making a late decision to switch nationality from Germany to his father’s land.
Boateng put up a sterling performance as Ghana made it to the quarter finals of the 2010 tournament, ultimately losing to Uruguay on penalties after Asamoah Gyan’s infamous miss in the dying minutes of extra time.
A journeyman in football, he has played for 11 clubs in his career and recently had a 6 month spell at Barcelona, where he won the Spanish primera Liga.
He is currently at Fiorentina, where he has already scored one goal in 2 Serie A games.
