The off duty Greensboro police officer who was killed on Saturday evening after an incident near a Sheetz convenience store has been identified as Philip Dale Nix.
Philip Dale Nix was off-duty when he saw a crime happening, Greensboro Police Chief John Thompson said at a media conference Saturday night.
He approached a suspect at about 4 p.m. Saturday at the Sheetz station on Sandy Ridge Road in Colfax and was shot, Thompson said.
He was taken to a hospital but died from his injuries.

Detective Sergeant Philip Dal Nix was the current supervisor of the Greensboro Police Department’s Family Victims Unit.
The squad is responsible for the investigation of Domestic Violence, Sex Crimes, Child Abuse and Elder Abuse.
In his capacity, he is part of the Elder Justice Committee, the Domestic Violence High Risk Team and routinely assists with the Friends Against Fraud and Vital Signs Programs.
Sergeant Nix has been a member of the Greensboro Police Department since September 1998 when he joined as a non-sworn Police Telecommunicator (911 Dispatch).
He became a sworn Police Officer in June 2001 and has worked throughout the department as a Police Training Officer, Financial Crimes Detective, Corporal and Sergeant.

Sergeant Nix has a Bachelor of Arts Degree from University of North Carolina at Greensboro and is a Certified Instructor with the State of NC.
