Top 10 Ghanaian Artistes Who Won Their First VGMA In 2020

This is today’s post on the top 10 Ghanaian artistes who won their first VGMA in the year 2020, including the categories they have won these awards from so far.

2020 is another year to award enthusiastic musicians for their better performance in the music industry, trying to promote Ghana with their talents in music.

In regard to appreciate these artistes for their much contribution to the music industry of Ghana, Vodafone Ghana Music Awards is set to reward these people in recognition of their much performance and contribution to the music industry of Ghana.

Due to the pandemic coronavirus, a lot of Ghanaians lose hope and focus in the VGMA 2020 — thinking there might not be any awards this year, but thanks to God and VGMA organizers for finally organizing and declaring these artistes of the year for us in Ghana and to the world.

This year’s awards has been much interesting as Lynx Entertainment record label signee Kuami Eugene pulled a surprise when he grabbed the topmost award, “Artiste of the Year”. He beat Sarkodie, Medikal, Kofi Kinaata, and Diana Hamilton to win the coveted award.

With Kuami Eugene pulling this surprise when he grabbed the topmost award in the “Artiste of the Year” category, other surprises include Kwesi Arthur, who beat Eno Barony to win the “Rapper of the Year” category, and Ras Kuuku, who won his first “Reggae-Dancehall Artiste of the Year” award in the absence of Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy.

What is VGMA?

According to Wikipedia, The Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA formerly Ghana Music Awards) was established in 2000 by Mascot to celebrate Ghanaian musicians. The awards are presented annually, and are broadcast live on GH One.

The awards ceremony features performances by artists. In 2020, the nominees jam which was scheduled for the 4th of April at the Koforidua Jackson Park was postponed. This was in compliance with the National Directives on Public Gathering due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Though the name comes as Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, Charterhouse Ghana is the organising company. Charterhouse Ghana organises VGMA to award artistes for their outtermost performance in the music scene of Ghana.

DoeNation happens to be the first on our list, for winning the VGMA 2020 as their first time in the “Afrobeats Song of the Year” and the “Best Group of the Year” catergories.

The twin brothers won two awards out of three nominations. This is their first time winning an award at the VGMA after failing to win the “Unsung” category last year.

The gospel singer Celestine Donkor was nominated in 2018 – her first time – for the “Gospel Artiste of The Year” but failed to pick the award. Joe Mettle snatched it with ease. However, this year, she proved her talent and worth by earning five nominations with her song “Agbebolo” featuring Nhyiraba Gideon. She managed to win two awards’; “Female Vocalist of the Year” and “Gospel Song of the Year”.

The Universal Music Group label signee touched her first accolade this year with her cinematic visual for “Killi Me”. The music video won her the “Best Video of the Year” award.

In the “Best Male Vocalist of the Year” award, MOG Music beat Joe Mettle, Kuami Eugene, Kidi and King Promise to win this award. MOG Music also earned nominations in the “Best New Artiste of the Year” and “Gospel Song of the Year”. This happens to be his first nomination at the VGMA.

J.Derobie, the “Poverty” singer won one out of three nominations. His breakthrough song won him the “Reggae-Dancehall Song of the Year”. He was also nominated for the “Reggae-Dancehall Artiste of the Year” and “Best New Artiste of the Year”.

The Aposor Gangstas guy won the the “Hip-Hop Song of the Year” with his song, “Don’t Be Late”. He was also nominated for the “Hip-hop/Hiplife Artiste of the Year” and “Best New Artiste of the Year”.

The “Wo” singer after competing with Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy – two of Ghana’s most influential figures in the reggae-dancehall fraternity, had his first feel of the “Artiste of the Year” accolade. Ras Kuuku won one out of two nominations.

The “Notin I Get” hitmaker of all time. Fameye is noted as highlife singer in the Ghana Music Industry. Fameye convincingly swept everyone off the “Best New Artiste of the Year” category and made the award his. Fameye won one out of three nominations. He was nominated for the “Best Collaboration of the Year” with the remix of his breakthrough hit single, “Notin I Get”, and “Highlife Song of the Year”

Teflon Flexx won the “Unsung” category by beating Imrana, Sherry Boss, Gyakie, Abochie and Kofi Jamar. Teflon Flexx is the “Medina” hitmaker.

Gasmilla

In Ghana, Gasmilla is noted well as “Telemo” hitmaker. Gasmilla picked up the “Vodafone Green Ambassador Award” for his role in Vodafone Green campaign.
