A deadly shooting occurred during Albany State University’s homecoming weekend in Georgia, leaving one person dead and five others injured.
De-Marion Tayshawn Daniels, 19, was identified as the victim who tragically lost his life in the incident, which took place on the university’s East Campus on Saturday evening.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear as the investigation is ongoing.
Albany State University Interim President Lawrence M. Drake II addressed the campus community in a statement on Sunday, expressing deep sorrow for the loss and emphasizing the institution’s commitment to safety.
In his statement, Drake confirmed that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is leading the investigation, with the support of local and state agencies.
He also highlighted the availability of counseling services for students coping with the emotional impact of the event.
“Albany State University remains committed to providing resources for the mental, emotional, and physical well-being of our campus community,” Drake said.
A press conference is expected later today to provide further updates. Albany, Georgia, where the university is located, is about two and a half hours southeast of Atlanta.
