Two brothers died late Sunday night in what police say was a murder, followed by a suicide.
According to a statement from Sgt. Eric McInerny, public information officer with the Wilson Police Department, officers were called to a shooting at an occupied dwelling at 10:39 p.m. Sunday.
The incident happened at 2706-B Byerly Drive, which is off the 2500 block of Nash Street.
“Officers arrived on scene and found two subjects lying just inside the front door,” McInerny said. “The two subjects were identified as brothers, Jared Charles Lucas, 24, of Wilson, and Colby Ryan Lucas, 23, of Wilson.”
McInerny said in a news release that “the caller, James Tyrone Hamm, 58, of Wilson stated that Jared was knocking at the front door. Colby went to answer the front door, when several shots were fired.”
“Hamm, who was also the brothers’ stepfather, advised that Jared shot Colby and fired at him as well before Hamm retreated into the residence,” McInerny said.
McInerny said personnel from Wilson County Emergency Medical Services arrived on scene and pronounced both young men deceased.
“It was later determined that Jared Lucas died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” McInerny said.
McInerny said that police are investigating the incident.
