Greene County firefighter, Battalion Chief Chris Eddy, was killed in an explosion on Wednesday, Sept. 4 while battling a truck fire in Greene County, according to the Facebook page, Fire Service Line of Duty Deaths.
The tragedy took place shortly before 10 a.m. on state Route 15 near Lick Skillet Road, on the outskirts of Greensboro, according to the report.
Eddy’s death is still being investigated but Morgan County Fire Chief Garret Smith said a “violent explosion” took place when the back of the trailer was opened.
“At the present time we do not know all the details surrounding the incident, however I feel confident in the coming weeks we will learn more about all that occurred resulting in this tragic event,” Smith said in a written statement. “I ask that we allow the investigation into the circumstances to unfold and resist speculating and spreading inaccurate information.”
Eddy was a Morgan County resident who lived in Buckhead. He was also a part time firefighter for Morgan County and a volunteer firefighter at Fire Station 4 in Buckhead.
“During my short time here, I had many opportunities to talk with Chris, and it was obvious from the first time I met him, he was very passionate about the fire service,” Smith said. “Chris was a fireman’s fireman, always ready to help, always willing to teach, and always ready to respond. Chris embodied everything a fireman is.”
Smith asked for everyone to keep Eddy’s family and Greene County Fire Rescue, and Morgan County Fire Rescue in their thoughts and prayers.
“Chris was an exceptional person, family man, and firefighter,” Smith said. “He will be deeply missed.”
