James, as a child, played a number of sports, including basketball and soccer.
However, due to safety concerns, his father did not allow him to play football or ice hockey.
James made national headlines in 2014 after he appeared in basketball highlight reels.
His participation in the Ohio Independent School League tournament in February 2018 earned him victory at his middle school’s tournament, Old Trail School in Bath Township in Summit County, Ohio.
Prior to attending high school, James played basketball for a number of different Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) teams.
When he was nine, he played in an AAU tournament for the Miami City Ballers while being observed by the head coach of the Kentucky Wildcats, John Calipari.
As part of his other achievements, he played a key role in the North Coast Blue Chips winning the John Lucas All-Star Weekend in Houston in March 2018.
He was recruited by the AAU team Strive for Greatness, at the age of 14, to play in the Elite Youth Basketball League (EYBL) for the under 16 age bracket in Indianapolis.
